Fruity jags a backstage pass to camilla and marc s/s 07/08

I'm far too deadliney to do much this fashion week, but thought I would try to sneak into a few shows and give you a flavour of the pandemonium. Or at the very least, a close up of some sweet makeup.

So, for Camilla and Marc's (very impressive) show, the make up director was the amazing Noni Smith, and to Fruity's delight, the makeup being used was Revlon, which as I ranted on my video review for the Limited Edition collection a few weeks back,  kind of proves they are definitely going all fashiony and backstagey with this range.


The key look for this show was metallic muted eyes, that took shadow all the way around the eyelid, under the eye and to the brow bone. Sounds like it'd be too much, but as it was a fairly sheer wash, it actually looked rather Good.

The key products usedwere the Diamond Dust, Molten Metals in Platinum, loads of false lashes and Bare It All Lustrous Lotion all over to illuminate. The cheeks and lips were played down, a lot. Please note the masses of brushes. You will NEVER get amazing looking makeup without them, Fruits. NEVER.

Here is a Very Pretty Girl waiting for her customised (Renya Xydis @ Concept/Valonz) wig to sit properly. Please note the clever tissue/clip thing: The clips are  calming the hair into place but by using tissue on top, they don't leave dents in the (usually heavily hair sprayed) hair. This is possibly one of my favourite backstage hair tricks.

And here are some shots of the finished product. See how the silvery colour brings out the colour of their eyes, no matter what colour they are? The green is greener, the brown looks super brown, and if I'd taken this shot of Amelia after her fringe had been trimmed, you would see how blue her eyes were. (Impatient Fruity.)

Fruity does fashion week. A little bit.

Fruits, I can't chat, have to haul ass to the Camilla and Marc show, which is the very first official show of Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, and one I'm interested to see for a variety of reasons, some of which include:

I like their clothes much.
One of my dearest friends, Pede, is styling it.
I have to be backstage to perve on makeup artist geniuses to take pics for you guys in, oooh, 40 minutes and I still don't know what to wear because what to wear at fashion week is an annoying thing to think about when you don't work in fashion and don't have a delectable wardrobe spewing with amazing options.

I love, love, love her style.

That immaculate '40s look blows my mind: Look at that hair, that makeup, those gloves, that beautiful outfit. She will be the perfect guest editor of Harper's Bazaar for fashion week. Because her style has class, y'know? It's elegance. It's not new - she's recycling days gone by and openly admits it - but that doesn't detract from the devastating chic of it all. And as I slide on my jeans and ballet slippers today, and jam on a hat or headband to hide a wig that with each drizzly day grows another 70 cm in circumference, I will silently, secretly wish I was born in an era that allowed me to wear sweet little gloves too, and matching skirts and jackets and forced me to know how to use rollers and construct finger waves. Maybe I'll just do it anyway. In fact, I'm seeing her perform Monday night: maybe I'll just nip backstage and thieve some of her clothes. I've heard she's very generous so I doubt she'll care.

No beef with checking the teeth

I had a tasty Japanese beef dish yesterday for lunch. It was called something I will never be able to pronounce, or even remember, but as I have an index finger, and they have visual menus, I should be okay.

This place I ate said beef, it was covered in mirrors. So we have Long sushi trains with stools enclaved between enormous, floor to roof mirrors. And then we have lots of sweet, smily, ebony-haired girls ready to drop Waterford to be at my side when I decide to lash out and order that green tea after all. I like these girls. Not only are they exuberant and fastidious in their customer service, but they care about their appearance, even though they have to wear black pants and a red t-shirt and dull flat rubber shoes.

"Anti-colour"

I had my make-up done brilliantly by Angelique, Bobbi Brown Makeup Queen - here she is - on Tuesday evening (I had the Lancome Colour Design Awards that night - I wasn't heading home to watch Australia's Next Top Model, although in that nasty rain, part of me definitely, absolutely wanted to) and as she delicately built up my delicious smoky, violet eye shadow, blending and smoodging and swiping, she used this wonderful term "Anti-colour".


And when she explained the context, it became even more excellent.


Basically, if you're doing intense, bold, vibrant, stand-out eyes, as she was doing on me, you need to apply an anti-colour on the lips to keep the face looking balanced. And beautiful as opposed to silly and side-show-esque. Ange? She used a brownie nude lipstick on me. It complimented the crazy purple eye makeup in the same way a sycophantic PA compliments her new boss: obviously but delicately. It was perfect.

I guess it's just a variation, or rather an update, on the 'One focus point only', bold lips demand nude eyes and vice versa business, but don't tell me anti-colour isn't the best new makeup term you've heard all morning/week/century.

Date night makeup when you've been out shaking it the night before.

Trish Fruit says:

Fruity B, from the Pea Eye Response Unit says:

Trish, I like that you called me wise. Ok. Here's what you're gonna do....

Put rosehip oil all over face and massage in.

Put eye cream in freezer.

Apply eye cream once it cold.

Tap tap tap your index and middle finger up and down the bone under your eye for 60 seconds per eye.

Gently half-pinch the skin along bone for same amount time.

Use a yellow based concealer on dark circles and then concealer (mix bit with foundation so it not cakey)

Use sheer, shimmery purple eye shadow and curl lashes.

Use white on inner V of eye if you’re capable or can be assed.

Apply black mascara top lashes only.

Dewy cheeks - use cheek creme and apply more on the apples, less on the bone.

Apply illuminator on your cheekbones and brow bones.

Super glossy lips.

Lots of loose, bedhead hair.

Look at yourself with sexy, Beyonce-filmclip eyes in the mirror and say: "I am hot. I look fresh and feel sexy and clever. This guy is some kind of fool if he can't see that. He should feel grateful he scored a date with me in the first place. DAMN my ass looks hot in these jeans."

We all have one, right?

And the word on the street (it's a very effeminate, aestheically-minded, appearance-centric street: lots of promotional girls and models and showgirl types live there) is that generally, women can't apply mascara without opening their mouth.

But I can.

That said, if I raised my eyebrows any higher while applying the good stuff they'd be in danger of joining my hair and concealing my forehead forever (such a nice girl, they'd say, used to have a such a lovely forehead), but it hasn't happened yet and seems fairly logically unsound so I won't fret too much over it.

So what IS the best lipstick shade for a one-year old?

JD Fruit very kindly drew my attention to an advertising visual currently being used for Gap Baby in the US.

The reason she did this was not because of the baby being in said advertisement, even though our little bambini could not have been older than... well, the ad states she's a whopping 12 months... and not because she is genetically perfect and absolutely gorgeous and such a delight that we should all see her, but because someone in the production meeting for this campaign had decided that you know what? That golden hair ? Those blue eyes? Those juicy little puckers? Ain't enough: SHE NEEDS SOME SMOKY EYESHADOW AND A SWIPE OF LIPSTICK.

FOOL! Jessica Alba isn't a Revlon spokesmodel!

And Fruity's got the scoop. Seems to be the week for it, huh?
Her first endorsement? The face (and lashes) for Revlon 3D Extreme Mascara. Oooh! Fruity can't wait to see it. Jess burns like toast. Ouch.

Which is different to Make An Effort Monday, mainly because it's a different day of the week but also because that day is about remembering how good it feels when you put in effort to your appearance, where as this day is about getting... your freak-ass back to zaaaaany town!

Today is Last Day Of School, right, when large financial companies let their drones slip into denim, when Silvio at Doppio slips you a double latte instead of a single for free and when Fruity gets out that green glitter liner still in its wrapper and gives it a slide across her lids.

So, get wild, fruits! Be bold! Live a little!

Wear a bold orange lip.
Swipe on some lilac shadow.
Paint your nails blue-black.*
Finally try shimmer on your cheekbones.
Do that juicy 60s eyeliner wing with some heavy upper-lid liner, and huge lashes and a nude lip.

Whatever feels FUN and takes you out of that COMFORT ZONE, basically.
