If you're pregnant, there are many rules.
Like not burning certain essential oils, avoiding cats and cutting out live caterpillars from your diet in case they nibble on your baby's toes.
There's also one about not dying your hair, which Cathy Fruit wanted some help with. In fact, she didn't want help with that rule, but with finding a lovely organic hair dye to use while pregnant so she needn't morph into a black-rooty little minger just cause she's With Child.
I asked my hair colourist people and All Round Excellent Kids at Atlantis Hair if they might like to answer it, seeing as though they do organic hair stuff. Janelle, who is one of my Hair Idols...
Say Hi, Janelle:
... answered for me, as Jose, the owner of Atlantis has just finished being With Child, and as such, has now Got A Child and is busy being a Terrific Mum.
Here we go...
Cathy: I'm hoping to make a baby later this year, and I'd like to transition to a chemical free hair colour so that I can reduce the number of chemicals my poor wee body ingests. Any ideas or recommendations?
Janelle: There is no conclusive research to say that hair colour is dangerous during pregnancy, however technology has moved on and there are great alternatives containing natural ingredients that are free of harsh chemicals, pregnant women love them as they have no smell, no fume and are low in toxicity. There are a few alternatives within the Organic & Mineral range, Watercolour, a semi, it is like a stain, it is 95% water, has no ammonia or peroxide, smell or fumes. With the body being 70% water, this is going to be much more agreeable to the body than something that is 100% chemical. Even for blondes there are now safer alternatives, we no longer need to use ammonia in tint and highlights are perfect for pregnant women as the colour doesn’t even touch the scalp and with delicious lightners that are alternatives to bleach, such as Seaweed Lightner and Blueberry Lightner, you can’t go wrong and there is really no excuse not to look glamorous whilst pregnant.
Cathy: Can I have chemical free/organic hair colour, and still be stylish?
Janelle: Of course! Just because a colour is organic doesn't mean that it has to be daggy. Organi & Mineral Research colours have over 110 colours in their full range, including hi lift blondes, so even the most high maintenance, platinum-blondes can go organic! There is no need to fear if you are a brunette or redhead either. They have everything from bright, fire engine reds to rich velvety chocolates.
Cathy: Do you know of a salon in Melbourne that will do chemical free hair colour, but who can still make/keep me looking groovy?
Janelle: Find one by calling 1300 850 778 or email [email protected]. Organic and Mineral colours are specially formulated to be more gentle, but give full salon results. Meaning you get your groovy colour, or grey coverage, or vibrancy you get from your regular colourist.
